Wellness Initiative

Thanks to a grant from the LibraryLinkNJ cooperative, the Library of the Chathams is pleased to announce its wellness initiative.  In partnership with the Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, the library will be offering a number of free individual counseling sessions for those in need of grief counseling, anxiety counseling, and/or counseling with any problems arising from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  These sessions will be with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who will be at the library on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; her hours are flexible and she can be available in the morning, afternoon, or early evening.

The Licensed Clinical Social Worker will also offer 3 support groups for those who are unemployed, those who own a small business and/or may be struggling with the economy during this time, and those afflicted with grief. Two of the support groups will meet on Wednesdays (one during lunchtime and one in the evening) and one group will meet during lunchtime on Fridays.

Support Groups

Support groups meet weekly and do not require registration.

Unemployment Support Group:
Did you lose your job during the Covid Pandemic? Are you looking to change or pivot in your career? Would you like support for dealing with this from other people going through the same thing? We are offering a drop-in support group for people who are currently unemployed and looking for work, whether this is due to the Covid Pandemic or other life circumstances.  The group meets Wednesdays from 12:30-2 pm and is run by a licensed clinical social worker.
Small Business Owner Support Group:
Many small business owners in Essex and Morris County suffered losses and setbacks due to the Covid Pandemic.  If you are a small business owner still struggling, and looking to bring your business back or looking to find support and guidance from fellow small business owners, there is a support group for you! This support group for small business owners meets Wednesdays from 5-6:30 pm and is run by a licensed clinical social worker. 
Grief Support Group:
Many of the patrons of the Library of the Chathams suffered the loss of loved ones during the Covid Pandemic.  We are pleased to be able to offer a drop-in, mutual support group for people making their way through the grieving process.  The group is run by a licensed clinical social worker and is designed for people who lost loved ones due to Covid or other life circumstances. This group runs weekly on Fridays from 12:30-2 pm.  

Yoga, Meditation, and Tai Chi Classes

The library is offering yoga, meditation, and Tai Chi classes for stress reduction and relaxation beginning in September. 
Saturdays, September 10 & October 1 – 10 to 11 am
Mondays, September 12 & 19 – 7:15 to 8:15 pm
Hatha yoga facilitates the integration of mind, body and breath.  With quiet focus we enter physical poses while employing breathing techniques.  During the hour we will stand, kneel, sit on our mats as well as lay down on our side, back and stomach.  Body awareness and alignment are highlighted.  We will feel refreshed and energized through this practice with our minds cleared and calmed.  These classes will be taught at the beginner level, though all levels are welcome, including absolute beginners! Please bring your own mat or bath towel.  Yoga is typically done barefoot to prevent slippage. You do not need to be flexible to do yoga, though over term, flexibility will result. Wednesdays, October 5, 12, 19 & 26 – 7:15 to 8:15 pm
Meditation is for every body and mind. Even busy minds can meditate. During the one-hour session, we will explore different meditation techniques and put them to use during 5 to 10-minute meditations. In time you will find the ones that work best for you. We will sit on chairs in a quiet darkened room. For those who prefer to lie on a mat or sit cross-legged on a cushion, please bring one.
Tai Chi:
Tuesdays, November 1, 8, 15 & 29 – 7 to 8 pm
Cathryn Iorio, RN, MS, CHC invites you to an introduction of how Tai Chi can be integrated into your day to reduce stress, as well as help you gain a happier disposition, more self- confidence, a stronger heart, a sharper mind, less pain, and better balance.  Tai Chi is recognized as a gentle form of mind-body exercise based on slow, flowing, choreographed movements often described as “meditation in motion”.  Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes and safe flexible shoes.  Cathryn brings her passion for health and wellness to her classes.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your participation, please contact library staff and we will pass them along to Cathryn.
