ESL (English as a Second Language)

For those wanting to improve their English language skills, this series of classes spans 8 weeks from April 4 to May 30 (no class on April 18).  The program will be conducted by Language Education and Resource Network (LEARN) and volunteer tutors.  Students will be divided into small groups by skill level.  The program is free – all you need is a commitment to learn!  Register online, in person, or call 973-635-0603.

Cartooning Around with Comic Book Artist Doug Baron

Learn to draw SpongeBob, Bugs Bunny, and many more with the help of comic book artist Doug Baron. He will demonstrate and talk students through each drawing from its basic shape to complete forms. Doug will point out important things to look for such as proportions, guidelines, feature placement, and more while giving fun facts behind each character. Doug will ask trivia questions where the students can earn “funny money” to win his drawings at the end of the session.

Mommy & Me: Spanish

Ages 18 to 36 months

No registration required

These 100% immersion classes are led by native-speaking, experienced preschool teachers from HudsonWay Immersion School.  They will introduce you and your child to the fun of learning a second language!  Through stories, songs, movement and games the teachers create the most effective environment to put your child on the path to bilingual development.  No prior knowledge of the language is required, and children may also be accompanied by a dad, grandparent or other caregiver.

CALL: Drawing Objects from Nature: Shape vs. Line

Peggy Dressel, a graduate of Pratt Institute and an instructor at the Ridgewood Art Institute and the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, will offer a four-week course for beginners and intermediate adult students on Fridays, April 5, 12 & 26 and May 3 from 12 to 1 pm.  After learning to draw objects based on the cone, spear, and cylinder, the class will start drawing more irregularly shaped objects from nature like flowers, fruit or animals.  Value, light, shading and composition will also be taught.  Students will be required to bring a fine art pencil set or a few soft pencils (such as HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, and 8B); a white drawing paper pad 11” x 14” or larger; and erasers—kneaded or Staedtler Mars (plastic).

The class is limited to 15 adult students.  Registration is required, and you must be able to attend all classes.  You may sign up online or call the library at 973- 635-0603.
