1,000 Masks Challenge Is On! Published on: March 28, 2000

The Library 1,000 Masks Challenge is On!

*Update – As of early August, 2020, our amazing volunteers have made more than 5,900 masks! The masks have been sanitized by the Chatham Emergency Squad and distributed to first responders in Chatham Borough and Chatham Township, Morristown Hospital, Overlook Hospital, RWJ/Barnabas Health Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel, and elsewhere as needed.  Let’s keep it going!

Please help protect our front line workers by making masks with materials we will deliver right to your doorstep.

No need to leave home thanks to Friends of the Library Book Sale funding and volunteers.

You will need tightly woven cotton material, flannel, thread and elastic.  To request materials, send an email to masks@chathamlibrary.org or phone us at 862-246-6108. Your materials will be delivered in a library tote bag provided in partnership with ECLC Pride while supplies last.  Keep the tote and seal your masks in a zip lock baggie (multiple masks per bag).

Here’s a process that will enable you to make at least 5 masks within an hour!

  1. Make a pattern from a paper bag 9.5″ by 6.5″ for an adult.
  2. Stack fabric up to 5 at a time depending on your scissor and cut to pattern.
  3. Details are at this link: https://www.atlantichealth.org/patients-visitors/donate-volunteer/donate-supplies-covid-19/make-facemask-help-covid-19.html

Ready for pickup?  Leave the masks in a bag on your porch and call 862-246-6108.

** If you can help meet the expense of supplies for the 1,000 Masks Challenge, please help by donating online or by sending a check to Friends of the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main Street, Chatham, NJ 07928.  Please note your gift is toward the 1,000 Masks Challenge.

Thank you for making this happen!
